Why people hunt it

Kelsey Dwarf won the American Dahlia Society's Stanley Johnson Medal in 2024 and sits at number ten on the Fab 50 for 2025. It is part of Colin Walker's Kelsey series, a run of open-centered varieties that have come to dominate the single and mignon single classes at shows. For exhibitors that means a reliable winner; for everyone else it means a compact, pollinator-friendly little dahlia that asks for very little. Introduced in 2015, it has the rare distinction of being both a show champion and an easy garden plant.

Growing notes, including the hard parts

Kelsey Dwarf is a mignon single in lavender, a small open-centered flower with a single tidy row of petals around the disc. Open-centered singles are pollinator magnets, so this one earns a place in a bee garden as readily as on the show bench. Mignon singles stay compact, which suits borders, pots, and small spaces. Standard care, and the low habit means little staking. It comes from Colin Walker's Kelsey series, the open-center line that dominates the singles classes at shows. A clean, easy, useful little flower.
