Kristine Albrecht, 2015

KA's Cloud

White brushed with a soft blush, the cream-and-pink wedding palette that made it famous. The blush reads stronger in cool weather and fades toward clean white in heat.

Why people hunt it

Cloud is the variety that put Kristine Albrecht on the map. Her site dates the Derrill Hart and Lynn P. Dudley awards to 2014, and a Floret interview describes it as introduced around 2015, a conflict we record rather than resolve. Either way it was her breakthrough. Albrecht breeds in Santa Cruz and licenses partner farms to propagate the trademarked KA's line, since she does not sell tubers herself. Cloud is now widely grown, tracked at roughly 22 suppliers, and still clears out most springs because the soft blush-white look never goes out of style for weddings. It is the rare breakthrough variety that stayed in demand a decade after its awards. If you grow only one Albrecht dahlia, this is the gateway.

Growing notes, including the hard parts

Cloud is a large informal decorative, ADS class A, with blooms in the 8 to 10 inch range. Treat it like any large dahlia bound for the bucket: stake well, pinch once when young, and disbud to push size and stem length for design work. It sits in the same blush-white slot growers want for weddings, where its softness is the point. Height is not cleanly sourced, so plan for a tall plant and support generously rather than guessing. Around 22 suppliers track it and it still sells out despite wide propagation. Cafe au Lait is the obvious comparison in this giant blush palette and is far easier to buy, but Cloud reads cleaner and more uniform where Cafe au Lait varies bloom to bloom. Breakout offers a similar large blush bloom if Cloud is gone.
