Copper Boy

Frans Sturm introduced Copper Boy in 2020, and the ADS classifies it 6013. It is one of the newer varieties in this catalog, and its arrival tracks a real shift in what growers want: the autumn palette of rust, bronze and copper moved from an afterthought to a headline category over the last decade, pulled along by the same wedding market that made blush famous. DutchGrown lists its origin as Holland. A ball dahlia in these colors is still relatively uncommon, since most of the rust and bronze attention has gone to big decoratives.

Copper Boy is a tight autumn-colored ball, the kind of flower that does the quiet work in an arrangement while something larger takes the attention. Balls hold their geometry in a bunch and travel better than soft decoratives, which is why growers keep them in the mix. Blooms run 3 to 4 inches. Height is the field where reports scatter: Fivefork puts it at 3 feet, Idlewild at 3.5 feet in their own field, DutchGrown at 36 to 44 inches, and Heirloom Soul averages 54 inches in western New York, so site and season are clearly doing a lot of work here. Pinch at 12 inches. A dark blend like this reads muddy at a distance and rewards being cut and looked at closely, so it earns its place in a bouquet more than in a border seen from the far end of a garden.
